The Commons is a cosy pixel art town you can hang out in, right in your browser.
There comes a point in a project where you either launch or you set yourself down the road of perpetual development. Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, put it like this:
"If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you've launched too late."
Well, I'm a little embarrassed by how sparse The Commons is, which by that rule means the timing is about right. Sparse is not empty, though, and if I stand a chance of making something worth playing long term, I need input. So I've launched an invite-only alpha playtest.
How to get in
Just ask. Request an invite and I'll send you a code that takes you straight into the town. Ask for a few and bring friends, because Zap in the arcade is much better with someone to challenge. Anyone can ask. Under 13s need a parent's email, and parents can read how it all works on the parents' page.
What's there now
There's still a lot in the works, particularly an overarching loop that gives you a reason to come back, but it's already possible to have a little fun in the arcade and decorate your house.
What I'd love to know
What would bring you back? Tell me that, plus anything broken or confusing, through Report then "A bug" in game, or at hello@thecommons.lol.
I'm usually in town in the evenings, but you can always find me on the discord.
What's next
Content will be added regularly: new furniture, hats, minigames, scenes, sounds, art, the works. I have big plans. They won't all land overnight, but I'll keep it fresh.
Come and see it
It's free, and it runs in your browser.
